American Brass Quintet Premiere: July 28, Aspen Music Festival

The American Brass Quintet will premiere a new piece of mine called Fixated Nights at the Aspen Music Festival. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to make it but judging from the rehearsals I’ve been to in New York, it will be great.

I remember being at the Aspen Music Festival back in college when I was a real pianist. I had the best time ever! - (mostly from hiking in the Maroon Bells).

If you want to hear an amazing ensemble, come in from the mountains for a day and check out this concert.

We Are Shouting is a production company out of Seattle that does work in film, web design and marketing.

I’ve done some work with them already but I’m really looking forward to new projects currently in production.

I’ll be performing in a concert put on by The Nouveau Classical Project this thursday June 24th. The musicians (including me) will don fashion inspired by the music, designed by Edward Lorenz and Eri Wakiyama.

Nosso Lar recording in Rio de Janeiro

I’m leaving saturday to Rio de Janeiro to help record Philip Glass’ score to the Brazilian film Nosso Lar. We will be working with the Brazilian Symphonic Orchestra.

I did a number of big arrangements for this one, so it will be especially fun. also, it’s in Rio!

Iota Ensemble Performing Suspended Harmonies

Tomorrow night the Iota Ensemble will perform a movement from my piece Suspended Harmonies for Mixed Ensemble. The concert is the start of the I/O Festival at the Williams College of Music in Williamstown, Ma.

It looks to be a very cool show. It includes music by some of my colleagues from Yale - Timo Andres, Sarah Kirkland Snider, and Missy Mazzoli - along with premieres of some of the composers at the school. I’m very disappointed that I won’t be able to make it but if you live nearby, you can!

Psycho Prelude for Glass Chamber Players

A few weeks ago, I did an arrangement of Bernard Herrmann’s classic score to Psycho for the Glass Chamber Players. The chamber group, consisting of a string sextet, performed it as an encore along with Schoenberg’s Verklarte Nacht and Glass’ Symphony No. 3 last sunday.

The nytimes review of the concert was really excellent — It even includes half a sentence about my encore. “Bristling”!

I’m very excited about the premiere of a new piece that I wrote for Kevin Clasen and Steven Naimark. Kevin has been a good friend since high school and it’s really thrilling to collaborate with him all of these years later.

The piece is called Programming Harmony for B-Flat and Bass Clarinet Duo.

They are taking the work on tour which begins at Columbus State University.

Recurrent Dream Recording Up

Unsound Grounds finally on record!

Yesterday, I got the recording of my performance at the Composer/Pianist Concert at Merkin Hall in April. I played this wild piece Unsound Grounds.

The piece has had a lot of play but this is the only live recording that I actually have in my hands… finally no more midi!!
